What’s Special About Vic Farms Turkey?

Turkey That Tastes Like Turkey!

When we launched Victorian Farmstead in 2009, our goal was straightforward: to showcase how exceptional meat can be when raised properly. This isn’t just a matter of theory—it’s a hands-on, labor-intensive process. To ensure our customers experienced the true taste of well-raised meat, we initially did everything ourselves, including raising our own turkeys organically. This approach allowed us to provide a genuine, high-quality product and demonstrate our methods to visitors on the farm.

As our business expanded, we faced a critical decision: continue as both farmers and purveyors, or specialize to better serve our customers. Fortunately, my background on a large ranch in Tomales provided a solution. I tapped into my network of skilled ranchers to handle the farming, while focusing on sales and marketing.

One of our primary concerns during this transition was ensuring that our ranch partners upheld our high standards. Thankfully, most of our ranchers, influenced by their own family traditions, were already committed to ethical, high-quality animal care. For our customers, this means:

  • Unrestricted Outdoor Access: Animals have nearly constant access to pasture.
  • No Growth Hormones or Antibiotics: We never use growth hormones or preventative antibiotics.
  • Non-GMO Feed: Animals fed grains receive non-GMO feed.
  • Natural Growth Rates: Animals grow at a natural pace, unlike the accelerated growth of industrial farms.

As my wife says, “All our animals, whether we raise them or they are raised for us, have one bad day.” Apart from that, they enjoy a high quality of life.

After several years of raising turkeys ourselves, we partnered with BN Ranch, whose turkeys were highly praised for their quality and flavor. Unfortunately, BN Ranch’s success led them to a deal with Blue Apron, and their turkeys are no longer available. We then began searching for a new partner.

We are excited to announce our new collaboration with Pittman Family Farms in Central California. Known for their Mary’s Chicken, Pittman’s turkeys are raised to our high standards. Their Mary’s Heritage Turkey and Mary’s Non-GMO broad-breasted Turkey are fed certified Non-GMO grains and have ample access to outdoor forage. This diet results in a naturally-growing, meatier bird, offering superior value and taste.

Ultimately, the most important aspect for you is taste. We guarantee that Mary’s Turkeys deliver exceptional flavor, ensuring that every turkey you purchase from us is the best available.

Like most people, we used to purchase our turkeys every year from one of the major supermarkets. Every year, it was hit or miss. Sometimes the turkeys were moist and tasted OK. Others…. well let’s just say we ate a lot of mashed potatoes those years.

I met Adam at a farmers market years ago and started buying our all our
meats from him. I also ordered our Thanksgiving turkey that first year and
talk about a difference! The turkey was amazing. It was moist and flavorful like I’d never tasted before. A 20+lb bird disappeared that night; there were no leftovers for the 1st
time ever. I told several friends how good the turkey was and the next year all of them
gave it a shot; they weren’t disappointed.

Now, years later, each of them gets their turkey from Victorian Farmstead Meat
Co. and we’ve started a new tradition; an awesome turkey every year. My entire family always looks forward to another amazing turkey and we’re never disappointed.
